For the past four years, I have had the pleasure of serving as your alderman, and during this time I have forged new bonds with residents while strengthening old relationships.I have attended hundreds of your block parties, block club meetings, community organization meetings, CAPS, park advisory, chamber of commerce meetings and much more. These gatherings have allowed me to get to know many of you. It has been rewarding to learn that we not only share common values but also a genuine concern for the 8th ward and the desire to create positive growth throughout our community.As alderman, I must meet the needs of my constituents, and since taking office I have organized and hosted a wide-range of events that focus on seniors, children and adults. This year I have held three town hall meetings. At previous meetings hundreds of you attended and many of you walked away with your questions answered and discovered new services provided by the City of Chicago and other agencies.For over a decade the 8th Ward has sponsored the Summer Sports Program. This year the program took place at both Avalon and Jesse Owens parks. Also at Avalon Park, we hosted Mayor Daleys Summer Track program, which allows children to compete and learn about track and field from professional coaches. Our annual Back-to-School Parade and Jamboree was held on Saturday, September 18th. Despite the rain, it still proved to be the largest in the ward and gave children, seniors, businesses and organizations a chance to interact on a day filled with fun activities. I am committed to providing and finding events to keep our children involved in safe and productive pastimes.I continue to work hard as an advocate for seniors in the 8th ward and across the city. I believe programs that help improve the quality of life for seniors is integral to their over all well-being. Safety is of the utmost importance to me. I am in daily communication with commanders of the police districts that serve our ward. I personally attend CAPS meetings with my staff and I encourage you to also attend so we can strengthen our relationship with the Chicago police.Economic development is alive and well in the 8th ward including: The beautiful New Montclare Senior Residence, New green State of the Art Jesse Owens Park Fieldhouse, New South Shore High School (currently under construction, scheduled to open in January 2011) and A. Finkl & Sons Co. To preserve our community as a viable and safe place to live and work, we must unite as neighbors. After more than a century at its current 2011 N. Southport address, A. Finkl & Sons is working with Alderman Michelle A. Harris, City officials, community leaders and neighborhood residents to build a new state-of-the art manufactur-ing facility at the former Verson Steel plant at 1355 E. 93rd St.Having experienced the exodus of manufacturers from Chicagos southside, local leaders view Finkls plan toinvest $140 million in a new facility as a boon to the area and to the city as a whole.In addition to potential new jobs, thenew Finkl campus should serve to help anchor commercial redevelopment in the Burnside, Calumet Heights and Pullman neighborhoods.In addition to economic development,Finkl has a long tradition of incorporat-ing social responsibility in its business model. As an active and engaged partner with community organizations, schools and neighborhood associations, Finkl has a strong reputation for being a good neighbor and community partner.
As your Alderman, I am excited to announce that when the new South Shore High School is completed, the old building will be demolished and the west portion of Rosenblum Park will be redeveloped as a new and improved community park space.The new park replaces the current park space located to the east, now the site of the new South Shore High School. The project includes the demolition of the existing school, and will bring to the community a refurbished softball field, new baseball field and football field, basketball and tennis courts, play lot and walking path. The project also includes the addition of a cul-de-sac along Constance Avenue just south of 75th Street.
Alderman Michelle A. Harris, Mayor Richard M. Daley, along with StateRepresentative Marlow H. Colvin and residents of the 8th Ward community, participated in a ribbon cutting cere- mony celebrating the New Montclare Senior Residences of Avalon. This brand new senior complex located at 1200 East 78th Street (78th Street & Woodlawn) is a beautiful seven story $20 million residence that is bringing excitement to the community and continuing the wards renewed economic development surge."I believe that the seniors who have lived in this community for years should be able to stay in this community and have viable options for housing if they choose to exit homeownership", stated Alderman Harris, and this facility provides that and much more.The Affordablly Elegant seven-story, $20 million Montclare Senior Residences of Avalon Park brings 102 large studio and one-bedroom apartments. The affordable rental development offers renters a cache of activities, programs, classes, day trips and entertainment. Amenities include office center, complete with computers and printers, fitness center, laundry facility, andon-site parking. To qualify for occupancy in this unique property, you must be at least 55 yearsold and meet specified income requirements.
